School Safety and Security Committee Approves
$12.4 Million in School Safety Grants to School Districts

Harrisburg, PA. — The School Safety and Security Committee (Committee) established within the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) by Act 44 of 2018 recently approved $12.4 million in school safety grants to 496 school districts throughout the Commonwealth. 

Per Act 44, school districts that submitted a meritorious application to the Committee were eligible for $25,000 to support one or more activities allowed by the statute.  Activities and items allowed by Act 44 include performing school safety assessments; purchasing security-related technology and equipment; supporting school safety-related and behavioral-health trainings; preparing all-hazards plans; hiring school resource officers, school police officers, school counselors, social workers and school psychologists; and providing for trauma-informed approaches to education. 

Of these applications, 76% of school districts applied for funding related to security planning and the purchase of security-related technology.  The next most popular activities/items requested included the purchase of visitor identification systems, the development and revision to school safety plans and all-hazards plans, and costs associated with training and compensation of school resource officers and school police officers.
