School Safety and Security Coordinators

Act 55 of 2022 amended Article XIII-B (School Safety and Security) of the PA Public School Code of 1949 to establish new requirements for School Safety and Security Coordinators.

Appointment of School Safety and Security Coordinators

School entities  must ensure appointment of a School Safety and Security Coordinator within 30 days of the legislation's effective date (July 8, 2022). In addition, whenever a vacancy in a school entity's School Safety and Security Coordinator occurs, the chief school administrator shall, within 30 days of the vacancy, appoint a new Coordinator.  NOTE: If your school entity has already appointed a School Safety and Security Coordinator, there is no need to re-appoint.

School entities must submit the name and contact information of an individual appointed as a School Safety and Security Coordinator to PCCD's School Safety and Security Committee within 30 days of the appointment.

Coordinator contact information can be supplied to PCCD via the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/QMSGSDX

Threat Assessment Team Membership

Pursuant to Article XIII-E (Threat Assessment) of the PA Public School Code, individuals appointed to serve as School Safety and Security Coordinators must also be a member of their school entity's established Threat Assessement Team(s).

Required Training for School Safety and Security Coordinators

On September 28, 2022, as required by Act 55 of 2022, the School Safety and Security Committee adopted *NEW* training criteria for School Safety and Security Coordinators. Click on the link below to access the approved Criteria:

School Safety and Security Coordinator Training Criteria

School administrators appointed as School Safety and Security Coordinators must complete mandated training that meet these criteria within one year from the time that the initial training that meets the criteria is offered. Once the training is available, newly appointed School Safety and Security Coordinators will have one year to complete the mandatory training.

At this time, these criteria are being posted ONLY for your reference; they are NOT the training as required under Section 1316-B. The one-year time frame for coordinators to comply with the new training requirements pursuant to Act 55 does not begin until the first trainings that meet the criteria are made publicly available by PCCD. This will happen at a later date.

More information about the School Safety and Security Coordinator training will be posted on this page when available. If you have questions, please submit them to RA-CD-SSSC@pa.gov.
