What: The 2022 CJAB Conference "Administering Justice in a Changing World" will bring together criminal justice, behavioral health, and treatment partners for what promises to be an engaging and thought-provoking one and a half-day event.  We have an exciting line-up of national and local experts who will discuss new and reemerging issues impacting our criminal justice and behavioral health systems, providing innovative strategies and collaborative solutions to meet the challenges ahead.

We are pleased to feature both new and returning plenary speakers this year.  Dr. Stephanie Covington will join us to discuss the growing body of evidence documenting the impact of childhood trauma on health, mental health, addiction, and the risk of criminal-justice involvement in her session entitled "Why Gender Matters:Creating Trauma Services for Justice-involved People".  She will further elaborate on the connection between trauma and addiction in her afternoon breakout session, "Trauma and Addiction: Theories and Strategies for Effective Intervention".

Dr. Joel Nuñez returns to discuss emerging insights into the physical, cognitive, and psycho-social development of adolescents, moving us beyond trauma-informed care towards healing-centered approaches for justice-involved youth.  He'll begin his discussion in his plenary session "Re-imagining Justice in An Ever-Changing Adolescent World: Beyond Trauma-Informed Care", and reflect on new insights and best practices in his afternoon breakout session, "Reflections on Re-imagining Justice in An Ever-Changing Adolescent World".

We will also be joined by David Garlock, a formerly incarcerated individual who shares his journey as a survivor of abandonment and abuse to returning citizen and criminal justice reform advocate.  Join us for "David L. Garlock: The Chapters of His Life" where he will discuss the chapters of his life through trauma, prison, and freedom.

In addition to these engaging plenary sessions, we will feature several break-out sessions covering topics such as data driven decision making, gun violence reduction strategies, working with individuals with special needs, collaborative strategies for successful coalition building, community support, and reentry.  We'll also be featuring information on decreasing justice involvement for individuals' behavioral health needs, and more.
